Sukra Mahadasha: What to Expect in Venus's 20 Years, and the Remedies

Twenty years long, Venus's period is the longest in the cycle and the one tradition links with marriage, comfort, art and prosperity. This guide explains what the Sukra Mahadasha brings and what is advised when Venus is afflicted.

The Sukra Mahadasha (శుక్ర మహాదశ) is the twenty-year period of Venus in the Vimshottari dasha cycle — the longest of the nine. A sixth of the whole cycle belongs to Venus, and tradition describes its years as the most comfortable in a chart: marriage, family life, beauty, art, vehicles, and money that buys pleasant things.

Venus is Shukracharya, the teacher of the asuras, and it rules love, marriage, wealth, the arts and the senses. This guide explains what its twenty years are traditionally said to bring, how they divide into sub-periods, and the remedies advised when Venus in a chart is weak, debilitated or afflicted.

What the Sukra Mahadasha is

In the Vimshottari dasha system, life is divided into nine planetary periods that always follow the same order and add up to 120 years. The Sukra Mahadasha lasts 20 years. Which period you are born into is decided by your janma nakshatra, the star the Moon occupied at birth, and every chart then moves through the rest in sequence. Our guide to the Vimshottari dasha explains how the cycle is set and read.

  • Anyone born in Bharani, Purva Phalguni or Purvashadha — the three nakshatras ruled by Sukra — begins life in this dasha, with only the balance of it remaining at birth.
  • Everyone else reaches it in its turn in the cycle, and a life of average length passes through five or six of the nine periods.
  • A horoscope prepared at birth normally prints the dasha table, so the dates of your Sukra period are already written in it.

What Sukra brings to the front

A Mahadasha does not change who you are. It decides which part of the chart speaks loudest for those years: the houses Sukra owns and occupies, the people and work it signifies, and the lessons it carries.

  • Marriage and loveMarriage, the spouse's fortunes, romance, and the quality of partnership in general.
  • Comfort and wealthVehicles, houses, jewellery, fine things, and money that arrives with ease rather than struggle.
  • Art and beautyMusic, dance, design, cinema, fashion, and any work whose value is in how it looks and feels.
  • Pleasure and the sensesFood, luxury, social life, and the appetite that tradition warns can quietly take charge in these years.

What people notice during the Sukra Mahadasha

The same period is experienced very differently by two people, because the result depends on where Sukra sits in your chart, which houses it owns and whether it is strong, weak or afflicted. The table below sets the two ends of that range side by side; most lives fall between them.

The Sukra Mahadasha at its best and at its hardest
Area of lifeWhen Sukra is strong in the chartWhen Sukra is weak or afflicted
MarriageMarriage made or deepened; a supportive spouse; harmony at homeDelays, separations, attachments that unsettle rather than settle
MoneyProsperity, vehicles, property, gains through partnership and through the artsSpending faster than earning, debt taken on for comfort, losses through partners
WorkSuccess in art, design, media, hospitality, fashion, jewellery, and any people-facing tradeTalent left unused, work that never quite becomes a living
Social lifePopularity, good company, invitations, ease among peopleReputation damaged through relationships, company that costs more than it gives
HealthGood looks, vitality, easy recoveryDiabetes, kidney and reproductive complaints, and the ordinary results of excess

Twenty years is the longest chapter a chart offers, and it is usually read in halves. The opening Sukra antardasha of three years and four months, followed by Surya, Chandra, Kuja and Rahu, carries the personal events — marriage, family, the home. The long Guru, Shani and Budha sub-periods of the second half, nearly nine years together, decide what is built on them. Many people look back on a Venus period as the most comfortable stretch of their life and also the one in which discipline slipped.

The nine antardashas inside it

Every Mahadasha is divided into nine antardashas (sub-periods, also called bhukti), one for each graha, beginning with Sukra itself and then following the Vimshottari order. Each one lasts its own share of the 20 years — the share is the antardasha lord's own dasha length out of 120 — so the sub-periods below are exact, and they are where the real turns of a dasha are read.

Antardashas of the Sukra Mahadasha (20 years in all)
Antardasha lordLength
Sukra (its own)3 years 4 months
Surya1 year
Chandra1 year 8 months
Kuja1 year 2 months
Rahu3 years
Guru2 years 8 months
Shani3 years 2 months
Budha2 years 10 months
Ketu1 year 2 months

The Sukra–Shani antardasha, just over three years, is the one tradition watches: Saturn's restraint falling across Venus's comfort is the classical signature of a cooled marriage or a lean stretch in a prosperous period. Sukra–Surya and Sukra–Chandra are read for tension with authority and for the mood at home, since the luminaries are Venus's natural adversaries, and Sukra–Rahu for attachments and spending that need watching.

Remedies during the Sukra Mahadasha

Remedies are not needed by everyone in a Sukra period. They are advised when Sukra is weak or afflicted in the chart, when it owns difficult houses, or when a hard antardasha and a hard transit fall together. What tradition prescribes is the same pattern used for any graha: mantra, giving, and shanti where the affliction is heavy.

  1. 1.Have the dasha read first

The dasha table is only half the picture; the rest is the strength of Sukra in your chart and the transits running over it. A consultation with MSAstrology reads all three before any remedy is chosen. If your chart also shows an afflicted Sukra, our guide to Sukra dosha explains the placements.

  2. 2.Sukra japam

Mantra japam for Sukra is the core remedy for its period, performed by purohits with the sankalpam in your name and gotram. On Jataka Remedies you can book 3,000 to 20,000 recitations, and the count is advised from your chart. Book Sukra japam.

  3. 3.Daanam through the period

The traditional daanam for Sukra is white clothes, rice, curd, sweets, and in many lists silver or perfume, offered on a Friday in your name if you choose it with the japam. Many families repeat a small giving on that weekday through the harder antardashas rather than once.

  4. 4.Shanti when the period is heavy

When several grahas are afflicted, or a difficult antardasha meets a difficult transit, a fuller Navagraha Shanti is advised instead of a single japam. Families who wish to strengthen prosperity alongside Venus often pair the japam with a Lakshmi Pooja.

I bow to Bhargava (Sukra), white as snow, jasmine and the lotus stem, the supreme teacher of the daityas, expounder of all the scriptures. (Navagraha Stotram)

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Sukra Mahadasha?

Twenty years, the longest of the nine Vimshottari periods. It is second in the Vimshottari order, after Ketu's seven years and before the Sun's six.

Is the Venus period good for marriage?

Tradition reads it as one of the most favourable periods for marriage, since Venus is the significator of the spouse and of partnership. The exact timing is read from the antardasha and the seventh house, not from the Mahadasha alone, and an afflicted Venus can bring delay instead.

Who begins life in the Sukra Mahadasha?

Anyone born in Bharani, Purva Phalguni or Purvashadha, the three nakshatras ruled by Venus. Because the period is twenty years long, those born in it often spend their whole childhood and youth inside it.

What are the remedies for a difficult Sukra Mahadasha?

Sukra japam (3,000 to 20,000 recitations on Jataka Remedies) with daanam of white cloth, rice, curd or sweets on a Friday, Friday worship of Lakshmi, and restraint in spending and relationships. Families often add a Lakshmi Pooja; where several grahas are afflicted, a Navagraha Shanti may be advised.
