Budha Mahadasha: What to Expect in Mercury's 17 Years, and the Remedies

The Budha Mahadasha (బుధ మహాదశ) is the seventeen-year period of Mercury in the Vimshottari dasha cycle. It is the last of the nine in the Vimshottari order, and it is the period of the intellect: study, speech, calculation, trade, documents and the web of contacts a person keeps.

Mercury is called the prince among the grahas, quick and adaptable, and it takes on the character of whatever it sits with. This guide explains what its seventeen years are traditionally said to bring, how they divide into sub-periods, and the remedies advised when Mercury in a chart is weak, combust or afflicted.

What the Budha Mahadasha is

In the Vimshottari dasha system, life is divided into nine planetary periods that always follow the same order and add up to 120 years. The Budha Mahadasha lasts 17 years. Which period you are born into is decided by your janma nakshatra, the star the Moon occupied at birth, and every chart then moves through the rest in sequence. • Anyone born in Ashlesha, Jyeshtha or Revati — the three nakshatras ruled by Budha — begins life in this dasha, with only the balance of it remaining at birth.
• Everyone else reaches it in its turn in the cycle, and a life of average length passes through five or six of the nine periods.
• A horoscope prepared at birth normally prints the dasha table, so the dates of your Budha period are already written in it.

A Mahadasha does not change who you are. It decides which part of the chart speaks loudest for those years: the houses Budha owns and occupies, the people and work it signifies, and the lessons it carries.

What people notice during the Budha Mahadasha

The same period is experienced very differently by two people, because the result depends on where Budha sits in your chart, which houses it owns and whether it is strong, weak or afflicted. The table below sets the two ends of that range side by side; most lives fall between them.

Seventeen years is long enough to hold a whole working career, and Mercury's period tends to move in many small steps rather than a few large ones. The opening Budha antardasha of nearly two and a half years usually sets the field of work; the Ketu, Sukra and Surya sub-periods that follow bring the partnerships and the standing; and the Chandra, Kuja, Rahu, Guru and Shani years that close the period are traditionally read for the mind, for expansion beyond what was planned, and for what is handed on when the cycle returns to Ketu.

The nine antardashas inside it

Every Mahadasha is divided into nine antardashas (sub-periods, also called bhukti), one for each graha, beginning with Budha itself and then following the Vimshottari order. Each one lasts its own share of the 17 years — the share is the antardasha lord's own dasha length out of 120 — so the sub-periods below are exact, and they are where the real turns of a dasha are read.

The Budha–Chandra antardasha is watched most, because the Moon is Mercury's natural adversary and the pairing is read for a restless, over-thinking mind. Budha–Rahu is read for agreements that should be checked twice, and Budha–Kuja for hasty words and disputes. Because Mercury is never far from the Sun, its combustion in the birth chart matters more than in most dashas, and an astrologer checks it before reading the period at all.

Remedies during the Budha Mahadasha

Remedies are not needed by everyone in a Budha period. They are advised when Budha is weak or afflicted in the chart, when it owns difficult houses, or when a hard antardasha and a hard transit fall together. What tradition prescribes is the same pattern used for any graha: mantra, giving, and shanti where the affliction is heavy.

3. 3.Daanam through the period

   The traditional daanam for Budha is green gram (moong), green cloth and, in many lists, a bronze vessel, offered on a Wednesday in your name if you choose it with the japam. Many families repeat a small giving on that weekday through the harder antardashas rather than once.

4. 4.Shanti when the period is heavy

   When several grahas are afflicted, or a difficult antardasha meets a difficult transit, a fuller Navagraha Shanti is advised instead of a single japam.
