Guru Dosha (గురు దోషం) is the condition of a weak or afflicted Jupiter, Guru or Brihaspati, in the birth chart. Jupiter is the greatest natural benefic, the significator of wisdom, dharma, teachers, children, wealth and, in a woman's chart, the husband. When it is strong it protects the whole chart; when it is weak, its blessings are delayed.
This guide explains the placements that weaken Jupiter, including the widely discussed Guru Chandal yoga, the areas of life where the effects are traditionally felt, and the remedies. Because Jupiter is the graha of grace, its remedies are among the gentlest in the tradition.
Who Guru (Jupiter) is in the chart
- Wisdom and dharmaHigher learning, faith, ethics, teachers and the guru principle.
- ChildrenProgeny, the 5th house, and the joy and continuity of family.
- Wealth and expansionProsperity, growth, generosity and good fortune.
- Marriage and counselThe husband in a woman's chart, advisers, judges and honourable counsel.
What Guru Dosha means
In Jyotisha, a dosha (దోషం) is not a curse but a placement that weakens or disturbs a graha's natural gifts. Astrologers describe Guru Dosha when one or more of these conditions appear in the birth chart:
- Jupiter in its sign of debilitation, Capricorn (Makara), without cancellation.
- Guru Chandal yoga: Jupiter conjoined with Rahu (and, in some readings, Ketu), said to cloud judgement and faith.
- Jupiter closely aspected or conjoined by Saturn with no benefic support, or combust by the Sun.
- Jupiter in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, especially as lord of the 5th or 9th house.
- Jupiter as the 7th lord in a woman's chart placed weakly, read for delays in marriage.
Signs of an afflicted Guru
Tradition links each graha to particular areas of life. When Guru is weak or afflicted, these are the areas where people commonly notice difficulty. Read them as tendencies to be balanced, never as verdicts.
| Area of life | Commonly reported when afflicted |
|---|---|
| Education | Interrupted or delayed higher studies, loss of interest in learning |
| Children | Delay or worry regarding children, distance from them |
| Marriage | Delayed marriage, especially in a woman's chart, or lack of good counsel in choosing |
| Wealth | Money that comes and goes, poor financial judgement, missed opportunities |
| Faith and outlook | Cynicism, loss of faith, arrogance, or being misled by false teachers |
| Health | Liver, weight and sugar-related complaints, swelling |
When it matters most
Guru Dosha is felt most during Jupiter's Mahadasha (sixteen years) and its Antardashas, and when Jupiter transits the 6th, 8th or 12th house from the Moon. Jupiter's yearly transit is watched closely for marriage and childbirth; a weak natal Jupiter makes a favourable transit all the more important.
Remedies for Guru Dosha
1.Chart study first
Confirm that Guru really needs attention, and how much. A consultation with MSAstrology reads the whole chart, the running dasha and the transits before any remedy is chosen.
2.Guru japam
The core remedy is mantra japam for Guru, performed by purohits with the sankalpam in your name and gotram. On Jataka Remedies you can book 3,000 to 16,000 recitations, and the count is advised from your chart. Book Guru japam.
3.Daanam
Giving is the half of the remedy that turns inward. The traditional daanam for Guru is Bengal gram (chana), yellow cloth, turmeric and, in many lists, a little gold or a book, offered on a Thursday in your name if you choose it with the japam.
4.Shanti when the affliction is heavy
When several grahas are involved, or the dosha coincides with a difficult dasha, a fuller Navagraha Shanti or a specific shanti pooja may be advised instead of a single japam.
देवानां च ऋषीणां च गुरुं काञ्चनसन्निभम् । बुद्धिभूतं त्रिलोकेशं तं नमामि बृहस्पतिम् ॥
devānāṁ ca ṛṣīṇāṁ ca guruṁ kāñcana-sannibham buddhi-bhūtaṁ trilokeśaṁ taṁ namāmi bṛhaspatim
I bow to Brihaspati, the teacher of the gods and the sages, golden in colour, the embodiment of wisdom, lord of the three worlds. (Navagraha Stotram)
