Chandra Dosha (చంద్ర దోషం) describes a Moon, Chandra, that is weak, afflicted or isolated in the birth chart. In Jyotisha the Moon is Manas karaka, the significator of the mind, so its condition is read for emotional balance, peace of mind, the mother, the home and the ease with which a person adapts to life.
The Moon is also the graha from which the Vimshottari dasha is counted, which is why astrologers look at it so early in any reading. This guide covers the placements that weaken the Moon, including the much-discussed Kemadruma yoga, the areas where its effects are traditionally felt, and the remedies that calm it.
Who Chandra (the Moon) is in the chart
- Mind and emotionsFeelings, memory, imagination, sleep and the capacity to feel settled.
- MotherThe mother, nurturing, and one's early home environment.
- Home and comfortDomestic peace, property near water, vehicles and daily comforts.
- Fluids and the bodyBody fluids, the left eye, the chest, digestion and, for women, reproductive health.
What Chandra Dosha means
In Jyotisha, a dosha (దోషం) is not a curse but a placement that weakens or disturbs a graha's natural gifts. Astrologers describe Chandra Dosha when one or more of these conditions appear in the birth chart:
- The Moon in its sign of debilitation, Scorpio (Vrischika), without cancellation.
- Kemadruma yoga: no planet other than the Sun in the 2nd or 12th house from the Moon, leaving it unsupported. Several classical cancellations exist, so it must be checked carefully.
- The Moon conjoined with Rahu or Ketu, called Grahana or Chandra-Rahu dosha.
- The Moon with Saturn (sometimes called Vish yoga) or closely aspected by Saturn and Mars together.
- A dark Moon: birth within a day or two of Amavasya, when the Moon has little light (paksha bala).
- The Moon in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, especially with malefic aspects.
Signs of an afflicted Chandra
Tradition links each graha to particular areas of life. When Chandra is weak or afflicted, these are the areas where people commonly notice difficulty. Read them as tendencies to be balanced, never as verdicts.
| Area of life | Commonly reported when afflicted |
|---|---|
| Emotional balance | Mood swings, anxiety, brooding, a sense of loneliness even in company |
| Sleep and rest | Disturbed sleep, vivid or fearful dreams, restlessness at night |
| Mother | Distance from the mother, or concerns about her health |
| Home life | Frequent changes of residence, lack of domestic peace |
| Health | Cold and cough tendency, water retention, digestive and hormonal imbalance |
When it matters most
Chandra Dosha is felt most during the Moon's Mahadasha (ten years) and its Antardashas, during Sade Sati, when Saturn transits over the natal Moon, and around lunar eclipses close to the Moon's natal degree. The Moon's fast transit means monthly ups and downs are normal; it is the longer dasha periods that call for remedies.
Remedies for Chandra Dosha
1.Chart study first
Confirm that Chandra really needs attention, and how much. A consultation with MSAstrology reads the whole chart, the running dasha and the transits before any remedy is chosen.
2.Chandra japam
The core remedy is mantra japam for Chandra, performed by purohits with the sankalpam in your name and gotram. On Jataka Remedies you can book 3,000 to 10,000 recitations, and the count is advised from your chart. Book Chandra japam.
3.Daanam
Giving is the half of the remedy that turns inward. The traditional daanam for Chandra is rice, milk, white cloth or other white items, offered on a Monday in your name if you choose it with the japam.
4.Shanti when the affliction is heavy
When several grahas are involved, or the dosha coincides with a difficult dasha, a fuller Navagraha Shanti or a specific shanti pooja may be advised instead of a single japam. Where the Moon is afflicted by birth-star doshas, Janana Dosha Shanti may also be advised.
दधिशङ्खतुषाराभं क्षीरोदार्णवसम्भवम् । नमामि शशिनं सोमं शम्भोर्मुकुटभूषणम् ॥
dadhi-śaṅkha-tuṣārābhaṁ kṣīrodārṇava-sambhavam namāmi śaśinaṁ somaṁ śambhor-mukuṭa-bhūṣaṇam
I bow to the Moon, Soma, white as curd, conch and snow, born from the ocean of milk, the ornament on Shiva's crown. (Navagraha Stotram)
Frequently asked questions
What is Chandra Dosha?
Chandra Dosha is a weak or afflicted Moon in the birth chart: the Moon debilitated in Scorpio, conjoined with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn, unsupported (Kemadruma yoga), dark at birth or placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house. It is read for the mind, the mother and domestic peace.
Is Kemadruma yoga always harmful?
No. The classical texts list several cancellations, and most charts that seem to have Kemadruma are cancelled by planets in kendras or by benefic aspects on the Moon. It should be confirmed by a careful reading, not assumed.
How many Chandra japams are advised?
Texts commonly prescribe 10,000 or 11,000 recitations for the Moon; on Jataka Remedies you can book from 3,000 to 10,000. The count is advised after a chart consultation.
Which daanam suits the Moon?
White items: rice, milk, curd, white cloth or silver, given on a Monday. On Jataka Remedies the daanam is offered in your name when you choose it with the japam.
