Kuja Dosha (Manglik Dosha): What It Is, When It Is Cancelled, and the Remedies

Kuja Dosha (కుజ దోషం), known across India as Manglik or Mangal Dosha, is the placement of Mars, Kuja or Angaraka, in certain houses of the birth chart. Because those houses touch marriage and the spouse, the dosha is checked before most Hindu weddings, and it is the source of more anxiety than almost any other rule in Jyotisha.

This guide explains what the dosha is, why Mars in those houses is thought to disturb married life, the many cancellations the classical texts describe, and the remedies. Roughly a third of all charts have Mars in one of the listed houses, and most of those people marry happily; the rule needs reading, not fearing.

What Kuja Dosha (Manglik Dosha) means

In Jyotisha, a dosha (దోషం) is not a curse but a placement that weakens or disturbs a graha's natural gifts. Astrologers describe Kuja Dosha (Manglik Dosha) when one or more of these conditions appear in the birth chart:

• Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the ascendant (Lagna). South Indian tradition also counts the 2nd house.
• The same placements counted from the Moon (Chandra Lagna) and, for marriage matching, from Venus; a dosha present from all three is considered stronger.
• Mars conjoined with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn in those houses intensifies the reading.
• Mars debilitated in Cancer (Karkataka) without cancellation.
• Cancellations include: Mars in its own signs (Aries, Scorpio), exalted in Capricorn, in Leo or Aquarius in the 1st house, in Cancer or Capricorn in the 4th, in Sagittarius or Pisces in the 12th; Mars with or aspected by Jupiter; a strong Venus in the 7th; and both partners having the dosha, which matches rather than clashes.

Signs of an afflicted Kuja

Tradition links each graha to particular areas of life. When Kuja is weak or afflicted, these are the areas where people commonly notice difficulty. Read them as tendencies to be balanced, never as verdicts.

When it matters most

Kuja Dosha matters most at the time of marriage matching, when the charts of both partners are compared, and during Mars Mahadasha (seven years) or its Antardashas. Mars transits are short, but its passage over the natal Moon, the 7th house or the ascendant is a traditional time for Kuja japam and Tuesday observances.

Remedies for Kuja Dosha (Manglik Dosha)

   When several grahas are involved, or the dosha coincides with a difficult dasha, a fuller Navagraha Shanti or a specific shanti pooja may be advised instead of a single japam.
