Kuja Mahadasha: What to Expect in Mars's 7 Years, and the Remedies

Mars's seven years are the most physical of the nine periods: energy, property, disputes and decisive action. This guide explains what the Kuja Mahadasha is traditionally said to bring and the remedies advised when Mars runs hot.

The Kuja Mahadasha (కుజ మహాదశ) is the seven-year period of Mars — Kuja, Angaraka or Mangal — in the Vimshottari dasha cycle. It is the most physical of the nine. Where the Moon's period is felt inwardly, Mars's is felt in what you do: work taken on, ground claimed, arguments had, risks accepted.

Mars signifies courage, energy, land and property, younger siblings, machinery, surgery and blood. This guide explains what its seven years are traditionally said to bring, how they divide into sub-periods, and the remedies advised when Mars in a chart is afflicted or carries Kuja Dosha.

What the Kuja Mahadasha is

In the Vimshottari dasha system, life is divided into nine planetary periods that always follow the same order and add up to 120 years. The Kuja Mahadasha lasts 7 years. Which period you are born into is decided by your janma nakshatra, the star the Moon occupied at birth, and every chart then moves through the rest in sequence. Our guide to the Vimshottari dasha explains how the cycle is set and read.

  • Anyone born in Mrigashira, Chitra or Dhanishta — the three nakshatras ruled by Kuja — begins life in this dasha, with only the balance of it remaining at birth.
  • Everyone else reaches it in its turn in the cycle, and a life of average length passes through five or six of the nine periods.
  • A horoscope prepared at birth normally prints the dasha table, so the dates of your Kuja period are already written in it.

What Kuja brings to the front

A Mahadasha does not change who you are. It decides which part of the chart speaks loudest for those years: the houses Kuja owns and occupies, the people and work it signifies, and the lessons it carries.

  • Energy and initiativeDrive, stamina, the appetite for work and the willingness to begin things alone.
  • Land and propertyBuying, building, disputing or inheriting property, and dealings with land in general.
  • Competition and conflictRivals, litigation, arguments with brothers or neighbours, and the courage to face them.
  • Heat in the bodyBlood, inflammation, accidents, cuts and surgeries — where the tradition reads Mars in health.

What people notice during the Kuja Mahadasha

The same period is experienced very differently by two people, because the result depends on where Kuja sits in your chart, which houses it owns and whether it is strong, weak or afflicted. The table below sets the two ends of that range side by side; most lives fall between them.

The Kuja Mahadasha at its best and at its hardest
Area of lifeWhen Kuja is strong in the chartWhen Kuja is weak or afflicted
WorkDecisive progress, promotion through effort, success in engineering, defence, sport, surgery or landRash decisions, quarrels with colleagues, jobs begun and abandoned
PropertyA house or land bought or built; a long dispute finally wonLitigation over land, loans taken against property, disputes with siblings over inheritance
TemperCourage, directness, the ability to protect othersAnger, impatience, words that cost more than they win
MarriagePassion and protectiveness; a decisive step takenFriction at home, especially where Kuja Dosha is present in either chart
HealthStrength, stamina and quick recoveryAccidents, cuts and burns, surgery, blood pressure, inflammatory and skin complaints

Seven years is a short period with a long memory, because Mars tends to produce events rather than moods. The tradition reads the opening Kuja antardasha as the most headstrong stretch and the Rahu sub-period that follows it as the riskiest, and it treats anything decided in anger during these years as the thing most likely to be regretted later.

The nine antardashas inside it

Every Mahadasha is divided into nine antardashas (sub-periods, also called bhukti), one for each graha, beginning with Kuja itself and then following the Vimshottari order. Each one lasts its own share of the 7 years — the share is the antardasha lord's own dasha length out of 120 — so the sub-periods below are exact, and they are where the real turns of a dasha are read.

Antardashas of the Kuja Mahadasha (7 years in all)
Antardasha lordLength
Kuja (its own)4 months 27 days
Rahu1 year 18 days
Guru11 months 6 days
Shani1 year 1 month 9 days
Budha11 months 27 days
Ketu4 months 27 days
Sukra1 year 2 months
Surya4 months 6 days
Chandra7 months

The Kuja–Rahu and Kuja–Shani antardashas are watched most closely: Rahu adds recklessness to Mars's heat, and Saturn's obstruction against Mars's push is the classical signature of frustration, accidents and disputes that will not close. Kuja–Budha is read for trouble through documents and speech, since Mercury is Mars's natural adversary. Mars's own transits are short, but its passage over the natal Moon or the 7th house during this period is a traditional time for Kuja japam.

Remedies during the Kuja Mahadasha

Remedies are not needed by everyone in a Kuja period. They are advised when Kuja is weak or afflicted in the chart, when it owns difficult houses, or when a hard antardasha and a hard transit fall together. What tradition prescribes is the same pattern used for any graha: mantra, giving, and shanti where the affliction is heavy.

  1. 1.Have the dasha read first

The dasha table is only half the picture; the rest is the strength of Kuja in your chart and the transits running over it. A consultation with MSAstrology reads all three before any remedy is chosen. If your chart also shows an afflicted Kuja, our guide to Kuja dosha explains the placements.

  2. 2.Kuja japam

Mantra japam for Kuja is the core remedy for its period, performed by purohits with the sankalpam in your name and gotram. On Jataka Remedies you can book 3,000 to 7,000 recitations, and the count is advised from your chart. Book Kuja japam.

  3. 3.Daanam through the period

The traditional daanam for Kuja is red items such as masoor or toor dal, red cloth, jaggery or copper, offered on a Tuesday in your name if you choose it with the japam. Many families repeat a small giving on that weekday through the harder antardashas rather than once.

  4. 4.Shanti when the period is heavy

When several grahas are afflicted, or a difficult antardasha meets a difficult transit, a fuller Navagraha Shanti is advised instead of a single japam. Where the chart also carries Kuja Dosha and a marriage is being arranged, a Kuja shanti is advised case by case.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Kuja Mahadasha?

Seven years, the same length as Ketu's period. In the Vimshottari order it follows the Moon's ten years and is followed by Rahu's eighteen.

Is the Mars period dangerous?

No. It is energetic. A strong, well-placed Mars gives courage, property and decisive progress in these years. An afflicted Mars is traditionally linked with accidents, disputes and anger, which is why the remedies emphasise both japam and self-restraint.

Is a Kuja Mahadasha a bad time to marry?

Not in itself. Marriages are matched on the two charts, not on the running dasha, and Kuja Dosha is a separate question with many classical cancellations. An astrologer reads the dasha alongside the match rather than instead of it.

What are the remedies for a difficult Kuja Mahadasha?

Kuja japam (3,000 to 7,000 recitations on Jataka Remedies) with daanam of red lentils, red cloth, jaggery or copper on a Tuesday, worship of Hanuman or Subrahmanya, and physical discipline. Where several grahas are afflicted, a Navagraha Shanti may be advised.
