Rahu and Ketu Remedies: Understanding the Shadow Planets

Of the nine grahas worshipped in a Navagraha shrine, two have no body you can see in the night sky. Rahu (రాహువు) and Ketu (కేతువు) are the chaya grahas (ఛాయా గ్రహాలు), the shadow planets. Yet in Jyotisha they are among the most discussed influences in any chart, and few phrases cause as much worry as “Rahu dasha” or “Kaala Sarpa”.

This guide explains what Rahu and Ketu are, the story behind them, what each signifies, how their dashas and transits are read, and the traditional remedies — japam, daanam, worship and shanti — with the calm perspective the tradition itself intends.

Shadow planets: what Rahu and Ketu are

Seen from the Earth, the Sun travels through the zodiac along a path called the ecliptic. The Moon's orbit is tilted to it by about five degrees, so twice in every orbit the Moon crosses the ecliptic. The crossing where the Moon moves northward is the north node, Rahu; the crossing where it moves southward is the south node, Ketu. Being two ends of one line, Rahu and Ketu are always exactly 180° apart, in opposite signs of every chart.

The nodes slowly move backwards through the zodiac, completing a round in about 18.6 years and spending roughly eighteen months in each sign. That is why Rahu and Ketu are reckoned as moving in retrograde motion. Eclipses can occur only when a New Moon or Full Moon falls close to a node — which is how the ancient seers came to associate Rahu and Ketu with the “swallowing” of the Sun and Moon.

The story of Svarbhanu

The Puranas tell the story briefly and memorably. When the devas and asuras churned the ocean of milk — the Samudra Manthan — for amrita, the nectar of immortality, Lord Vishnu took the enchanting form of Mohini to serve it. An asura named Svarbhanu, son of Simhika, disguised himself and sat among the devas, between Surya and Chandra. As he drank, the Sun and Moon recognised him, and Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra severed his head. Having tasted amrita, he did not perish: the head became Rahu and the body became Ketu.

Because Surya and Chandra revealed him, the story says, Rahu and Ketu overshadow the Sun and Moon at the time of eclipses. Read with devotion, the story is less about enmity than about a being who, touched by the nectar, was given a lasting place among the nine grahas — honoured in every Navagraha shrine to this day.

What Rahu and Ketu signify

A well-known saying of Jyotisha is Shanivat Rahu, Kujavat Ketu — Rahu gives results like Shani (Saturn), and Ketu like Kuja (Mars). Beyond that, they are read as two halves of one story: Rahu is the head that hungers for experience, Ketu the body that has already lived it.

Rahu

Rahu signifies worldly desire, ambition and the pull towards the new and unfamiliar — foreign lands and cultures, technology, unconventional paths and sudden rises. Its shadow side is illusion (maya), restlessness and obsession. Rahu rules the nakshatras Ardra, Swati and Shatabhisha.

Ketu

Ketu signifies detachment, intuition, spiritual insight, past-life karma and moksha (liberation). It can give remarkable depth in research, healing and spiritual life. Its affliction, as our Ketu Japam & Daanam page notes, is traditionally associated with confusion, fear, sudden losses and emotional isolation. Ketu rules Ashwini, Magha and Moola — three of the Gandanta stars discussed in our article on Janana Dosha and nakshatra shanti.

Having no sign of their own, the nodes largely give the results of the sign they occupy, the lord of that sign and the planets joined with them. Traditions differ even on their exaltation — Rahu in Vrishabha (Taurus) or Mithuna (Gemini), Ketu in Vrischika (Scorpio) or Dhanu (Sagittarius) — a reminder that nodal placements are best judged by an experienced astrologer.

Rahu and Ketu Mahadasha and transits

In the Vimshottari dasha system followed across South India, Rahu Mahadasha lasts 18 years and Ketu Mahadasha 7 years. Rahu's period is followed by Guru (Jupiter) and Ketu's by Shukra (Venus). Within every Mahadasha, Rahu and Ketu also run shorter Antardashas (sub-periods).

If you were born in Ardra, Swati or Shatabhisha, your life began in Rahu Mahadasha; if in Ashwini, Magha or Moola, in Ketu Mahadasha. How much of it remained at birth depends on the Moon's exact position within the star.

A dasha is not simply good or bad. Many people rise remarkably in Rahu's period — in careers abroad, in technology, in public life — while Ketu's period often turns the attention inward. What a period brings depends on the house the node occupies, its dispositor and conjunctions, and the strength of the whole chart.

Transits

As Rahu and Ketu move through the signs, their passage over the natal Moon, the Lagna and other sensitive points is watched closely. The Rahu–Ketu axis and commonly discussed yogas

Because the nodes are always opposite, astrologers read them as an axis across two houses: 1st–7th (self and partnership), 2nd–8th (family resources and transformation), 3rd–9th (effort and fortune), 4th–10th (home and career), 5th–11th (children and gains) or 6th–12th (service and release). Rahu shows where a person is drawn to grow; Ketu where they already carry skill and may feel detached.

• Grahana yoga — Rahu or Ketu joined with the Sun or Moon, echoing an eclipse. It is usually read as a call to steady the mind or self-confidence, and its weight depends on the rest of the chart.
• Guru Chandala yoga — Rahu (in some texts, Ketu) with Jupiter, traditionally read as a test of judgement and values. Its effect varies widely with sign and house.
• Sarpa Dosha — a term used differently across traditions, often for nodal afflictions to the houses of marriage or children. Our japam services list it among their indications.
• Kaala Sarpa — the pattern in which all seven other grahas fall on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis.

Traditional remedies for Rahu and Ketu

• Rahu JapamRecitation of the Rahu mantra, advised for Rahu Dosha and Sarpa Dosha, in Rahu's Mahadasha or Antardasha, or when Rahu is in the 8th or 12th house or joined with Shani or Ketu. The full traditional count is 18,000; your astrologer advises the number you need.
• Ketu JapamRecitation of the Ketu mantra, advised for Ketu Dosha and Sarpa Dosha, in Ketu's Mahadasha or Antardasha, or when Ketu is with Shani or Kuja or in the 8th or 12th house. The full traditional count is 7,000.
• DaanamCharity completes the japam. Traditionally, urad (black gram, మినుములు) and a black or blue cloth are given for Rahu; sesame seeds, mustard oil or smoky-coloured items for Ketu, and many Telugu families also give horse gram (ఉలవలు).
• Durga and GanapathiWorship of Goddess Durga is traditionally associated with pacifying Rahu, and Lord Ganapathi with Ketu. Many South Indian families also pray to Subrahmanya and the Naga devatas for nodal afflictions.
• Navagraha ShantiWhen other grahas are afflicted along with the nodes, Navagraha Shanti worships all nine together, with japam for the afflicted planets and daanam. See our Navagraha Shanti guide.
• Ugraradha ShantiFor intense Rahu–Ketu periods, Ugraradha Shanti includes Navagraha Homa, archana to the Ugra Devatas — Rudra, Bhairava, Narasimha and Durga — Rudra Japa or Maha Mrityunjaya Homa and Durga Saptashati Parayanam.

Rahu japam is often performed on dates aligned with your Janma Nakshatra, and Ketu japam on Tuesdays or a day aligned with your birth star. Many families also chant the Navagraha Stotram daily; its verses for Rahu and Ketu are below.

पलाशपुष्पसङ्काशं तारकाग्रहमस्तकम् । रौद्रं रौद्रात्मकं घोरं तं केतुं प्रणमाम्यहम् ॥
