Ketu Dosha (కేతు దోషం) is the condition of an afflicting Ketu, the south node of the Moon, in the birth chart. Ketu is the tail of the eclipse serpent: headless, and so without appetite, it stands for detachment, past-life karma, intuition and moksha. Where Rahu grasps, Ketu lets go, sometimes before a person is ready. Our guide to the shadow planets explains the pair; this article focuses on Ketu's dosha.

Ketu's effects are subtle. It removes rather than adds, and it is often behind the feeling that something is missing without a clear reason. This guide covers the placements that make Ketu difficult, the areas of life where the effects are traditionally noticed, and the remedies, from japam and daanam to the worship of Ganapathi.

Who Ketu (the south node) is in the chart

  • Detachment and mokshaRenunciation, spiritual insight, liberation and the wisdom of past lives.
  • Intuition and healingSudden knowing, mantra, healing arts, astrology and the occult.
  • Confusion and fearAimlessness, doubt, unexplained fears and a sense of isolation.
  • Sudden loss and sharp eventsAccidents, surgeries, fevers, separations and abrupt endings.

What Ketu Dosha means

In Jyotisha, a dosha (దోషం) is not a curse but a placement that weakens or disturbs a graha's natural gifts. Astrologers describe Ketu Dosha when one or more of these conditions appear in the birth chart:

  • Ketu conjoined with the Moon, read for a detached or fearful mind, or with the Sun, read with Pitru dosha in some traditions.
  • Ketu in the 1st, 5th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, where it detaches the self, children, marriage, longevity or brings losses.
  • Ketu conjoined with Mars or with Saturn, sharpening its cutting quality.
  • Ketu in the 9th house afflicting the 9th lord, read in some traditions as a sign of ancestral (Pitru) debts.
  • Ketu closely on the ascendant degree or the lord of the ascendant.

Signs of an afflicted Ketu

Tradition links each graha to particular areas of life. When Ketu is weak or afflicted, these are the areas where people commonly notice difficulty. Read them as tendencies to be balanced, never as verdicts.

Areas of life traditionally governed by Ketu
Area of lifeCommonly reported when afflicted
MindConfusion about direction, unexplained fear, a feeling of being cut off from people
MarriageDetachment or separation from the partner when Ketu sits in the 7th house
ChildrenDelay or worry regarding children when Ketu afflicts the 5th house
HealthFevers, infections, mysterious pains, surgeries, skin and nerve complaints
Work and moneySudden losses, projects abandoned midway, difficulty holding on to gains

When it matters most

Ketu Dosha is felt most during Ketu's Mahadasha (seven years) and its Antardashas, and when Ketu transits over the natal Moon, the ascendant or the 7th house. Ketu's dasha often coincides with spiritual turning points; families traditionally perform Ketu japam at its start and around eclipses close to natal Ketu.

Remedies for Ketu Dosha

  1. 1.Chart study first

Confirm that Ketu really needs attention, and how much. A consultation with MSAstrology reads the whole chart, the running dasha and the transits before any remedy is chosen.

  2. 2.Ketu japam

The core remedy is mantra japam for Ketu, performed by purohits with the sankalpam in your name and gotram. On Jataka Remedies you can book 3,000 to 7,000 recitations, and the count is advised from your chart. Book Ketu japam.

  3. 3.Daanam

Giving is the half of the remedy that turns inward. The traditional daanam for Ketu is sesame seeds, mustard oil, horse gram, a multicoloured blanket or smoky-coloured items, offered on a Tuesday in your name if you choose it with the japam.

  4. 4.Shanti when the affliction is heavy

When several grahas are involved, or the dosha coincides with a difficult dasha, a fuller Navagraha Shanti or a specific shanti pooja may be advised instead of a single japam. Where Ketu's affliction is read together with ancestral debts, families also perform tarpanam for their forebears, which we can advise on.

पलाशपुष्पसङ्काशं तारकाग्रहमस्तकम् । रौद्रं रौद्रात्मकं घोरं तं केतुं प्रणमाम्यहम् ॥

palāśa-puṣpa-saṅkāśaṁ tārakā-graha-mastakam raudraṁ raudrātmakaṁ ghoraṁ taṁ ketuṁ praṇamāmyaham

I bow to Ketu, glowing like the palasha flower, the crown of the stars and planets, fierce in form and nature, awe-inspiring. (Navagraha Stotram)

Frequently asked questions

What is Ketu Dosha?

Ketu Dosha is an afflicting Ketu in the birth chart: Ketu with the Moon or Sun, in the 1st, 5th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, with Mars or Saturn, or afflicting the 9th house. It is read for confusion, fear, detachment and sudden loss.

How many Ketu japams are advised?

Classical texts prescribe 7,000 or 17,000 recitations for Ketu; on Jataka Remedies you can book from 3,000 to 7,000. The count is advised after a chart consultation.

Which daanam and day suit Ketu?

Ketu has no weekday of its own; Tuesday is commonly used. The traditional daanam is sesame, mustard oil, horse gram or a blanket, given in your name if you choose daanam with the japam.

Is cat's eye (vaidurya) the remedy for Ketu?

Cat's eye strengthens Ketu, which suits only particular charts. For most afflictions the tradition pacifies Ketu through japam, daanam and Ganapathi worship rather than strengthening it. Ask for a chart-based gemstone recommendation before wearing one.
