Rahu Dosha (రాహు దోషం) is the condition of an afflicting Rahu, the north node of the Moon, in the birth chart. Rahu has no body, yet in Jyotisha it is read for obsession, ambition, foreign things, illusion and sudden change. When it sits on a sensitive point or with a luminary, its effects are felt sharply. Our guide to the shadow planets explains what Rahu and Ketu are; this article focuses on the dosha itself.
Rahu amplifies whatever it touches. The same placement that brings sudden success in one period can bring sudden reversal in another. This guide covers the placements that make Rahu difficult, the areas of life where the effects are traditionally noticed, and the remedies, from japam and daanam to the worship of Durga.
Who Rahu (the north node) is in the chart
- Desire and ambitionWorldly hunger, unconventional paths, fame and the drive to break limits.
- The foreign and the newForeign lands and people, technology, mass media and everything outside tradition.
- Illusion and confusionDeception, addiction, obsession, fear and the fog that hides clear judgement.
- Sudden eventsWindfalls and reversals, unexpected turns, and karmic entanglements.
What Rahu Dosha means
In Jyotisha, a dosha (దోషం) is not a curse but a placement that weakens or disturbs a graha's natural gifts. Astrologers describe Rahu Dosha when one or more of these conditions appear in the birth chart:
- Rahu conjoined with the Moon or with the Sun, the Grahana (eclipse) doshas, read for a shaken mind or a clouded sense of self.
- Rahu in the 1st, 5th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, where it disturbs the self, children, marriage, longevity or losses.
- Kaala Sarpa: all seven planets between Rahu and Ketu, interpreted very differently across traditions.
- Rahu conjoined with Mars (Angarak yoga) or with Saturn, mixing shadow with heat or restriction.
- Rahu closely on the ascendant degree or on the lord of the ascendant.
Signs of an afflicted Rahu
Tradition links each graha to particular areas of life. When Rahu is weak or afflicted, these are the areas where people commonly notice difficulty. Read them as tendencies to be balanced, never as verdicts.
| Area of life | Commonly reported when afflicted |
|---|---|
| Mind | Anxiety, phobias, obsessive thinking, disturbed sleep, addictions |
| Marriage | Unconventional or troubled partnerships when Rahu sits in the 7th house |
| Career and money | Sudden gains followed by sudden losses, deception by others, legal entanglements |
| Children | Worry about children when Rahu afflicts the 5th house |
| Health | Unexplained ailments, poisoning and allergies, conditions that are hard to diagnose |
When it matters most
Rahu Dosha is felt most during Rahu's Mahadasha (eighteen years) and its Antardashas, and when Rahu transits over the natal Moon, the ascendant or the 7th house. Eclipses on or near natal Rahu's degree are traditional times for Rahu japam and daanam, and for quiet reflection rather than new beginnings.
Remedies for Rahu Dosha
1.Chart study first
Confirm that Rahu really needs attention, and how much. A consultation with MSAstrology reads the whole chart, the running dasha and the transits before any remedy is chosen.
2.Rahu japam
The core remedy is mantra japam for Rahu, performed by purohits with the sankalpam in your name and gotram. On Jataka Remedies you can book 3,000 to 18,000 recitations, and the count is advised from your chart. Book Rahu japam.
3.Daanam
Giving is the half of the remedy that turns inward. The traditional daanam for Rahu is black gram (urad), dark blue or black cloth, and in many lists a coconut or mustard oil, offered on a Saturday in your name if you choose it with the japam.
4.Shanti when the affliction is heavy
When several grahas are involved, or the dosha coincides with a difficult dasha, a fuller Navagraha Shanti or a specific shanti pooja may be advised instead of a single japam. During Rahu and Ketu transits over sensitive points, Ugraradha Shanti is the fuller remedy.
